Your home is an extension of your personality and your style. As seasons and trends change, you change your style and the outfits in your collection, so why should your home décor remain the same throughout your life?
In a country as colourful and diverse as India, revamping your home décor can be exciting and fun. With a multitude of choices to pick from, you can never go wrong with Indian handicrafts, fabrics, and home décor pieces to brighten up your living spaces.
Decorating your home is like an art project, which does not have too many rules. Do what feels best for you to decorate your rooms and have fun while you are at it. But, keep a few design principles in mind to make the most out of your space and maximize its potential. You do not want your home to look cluttered and messy, right?
Here are some simple dos and don’ts to keep in mind before you take on a new home decorating project:
1. DO: Mix modern with traditional
With so many different materials, textures, colours, and prints available in the market today, it is easy to find something even for the most modern of homes. If a traditional woodwork artefact from North India is not your style, why not opt for a digital framed photograph of a Madhubani painting? Even if you have designed your space with a modern theme in mind, a few traditional pieces will help break the monotony. A simple tip to keep in mind when mixing two different eras or styles is to keep the different décor pieces in the same colour palette to tie the whole look together.

2. DON’T: Focus on only one style
Gone are the days when the entire house was designed, keeping only one theme or style in mind. Different rooms offer different opportunities for you to mix and match all of your favourite styles. If you have a minimalist and modern living room, do not let anybody stop you from designing a colourful and a more traditional bedroom. Play around with all the different themes you like and give each room its unique personality.
3. DO: Play with colours and textures
An easy way to incorporate colours and textures into any living space is by changing the fabrics in that room. Swap out your thick, heavy, and neutral rugs with a lightweight and colourful dhurrie from Uttar Pradesh or change your decorative cushion cover to an ethnic cover with light embroidery. Work with different textures and fabrics like silk, sequins, woven fabrics, etc. to upscale your décor. Once you realize how different fabrics, textures, and colours work together, the possibilities are endless.

4. DON’T: Go overboard
While it surely is fun to play with different colours to brighten up your area, adding too many colours that clash, especially in a small space, can make your room look cluttered and unorganized. As tempting as it might be to display all the stunning artefacts in your collection, do not go overboard with your décor pieces. Pick a few statement art and decor pieces and colours for each room and keep the rest of the décor soft, simple, and easy on the eye. If you do want to use more than two or three colours in a single room, make sure they are in the same colour story and complement each other. A bedroom with one red wall and three blue walls is probably not a good idea!
